Engineer, working at the seam between craft and product.
I'm Newton Masese, a final-year Computer Science student at Keele University and a former Front-End Developer at Reliable Insights, where I spent a year on a production data platform.
How I think about engineering
The most senior thing an engineer can do is delete code. The second most senior is refuse to add it. Most of the bugs and the cost in production software come from complexity that didn't need to exist. I try to keep the surface area small and the failure modes obvious.
The 99% query optimisation I did on the data platform wasn't a clever algorithm — it was reading the explain plan, understanding the existing system, and deleting a join that didn't need to be there. That experience shaped how I approach problems: understand first, change second.
What I'm looking for
Graduate engineering roles where juniors are trusted with real problems, and freelance work where I can ship end-to-end. I'm particularly interested in teams building data infrastructure, developer tooling, or AI-native products.
